Business phone numbers
Choosing one, and moving an established one across without a day of silence.
Read about numbersPlano is covered by 972, 469 and 214, and so is a great deal of ground on every side of it. No set of digits here belongs to one suburb, which means your number cannot do the job people still expect it to do. Something else has to.

The three codes over this city sit on top of each other rather than beside each other, and all three run well past the city limit. A firm here and a firm several suburbs away can hold the same digits, and frequently do, so nothing at the front of a number tells a caller which part of the north side they have reached.
That settles the question most people arrive with. There is no code to hold out for, because none of them marks you as being from here rather than somewhere else nearby. Take whichever you are offered. Everybody dials ten digits anyway.
The consequence is the useful part. If your business needs to be read as a Plano business rather than a north Texas one, the number is not where that gets proved. Your website proves it, your Google Business Profile proves it, and your greeting proves it in the first few words a caller hears.
This is a suburb of head offices, and it changes who is on the other end of the line. A large share of the people who ring a small business here work for a big employer, or sell to one, and either way they have been transferred twice before lunch.
That cuts against the instinct the market creates. Small firms in an affluent, corporate town try to sound larger than they are, and build a menu with four departments that all reach the same two people. It does not read as substance. It reads as another queue, from somebody who could have just answered.
What this audience reads as competence is unglamorous:
The metro keeps Central time, and a suburb full of corporate offices takes a lot of calls from outside it. The eastern half of the country is an hour ahead and rings before your door is unlocked, the western states are two hours behind and ring once your office has emptied. That is an hour at each end of the day you either cover deliberately or lose quietly.
Underneath that sits a second clock. Households here ring in the evening, because the person who makes the decision has been at work all day. A business selling to companies and to households at once is answering two different days, and the seam between them is where enquiries go missing.
Then there is the driving. Distances look ordinary on a map and take a long time at the wrong hour, so the person best placed to answer is often in a vehicle and staying there. Settle in advance whether a call rings them, waits for a desk, or takes a message.
The year adds its own pressure. Summer heat runs for months without a break and keeps the trades that deal with it flat out. Hail arrives in a hurry and puts a fortnight of calls into two days. Where people shortlist before they ring, the caller who reaches a full mailbox tries the next company on the list. Set the overflow for that week rather than the average one.
None of the phone service is particular to this city. The app, the sound on the line and the settings behind it are what a business gets in a small town in another state. There is no local edition and nothing a provider tunes for north Texas. Two things here are genuinely local: the three digits at the front of the number, and every decision you make about hours, routing and overflow.
We should be equally plain about ourselves. AldoMedia works from Buffalo, New York. There is no Texas office, nobody who can drive over, and we keep Eastern time, so our afternoon finishes while yours is still going. For choosing a number, deciding where calls land and writing a greeting that holds a caller, none of that makes a difference. For anything needing a hand on a socket in your building it does, and we will say so rather than take the work. We are a paid affiliate rather than the operator. The product sits on the main VoIP guide, and the wider view on the Texas page.
Write down when business callers ring and when household callers ring, before you buy anything. Most firms here serve both without having said so out loud, and that decision shapes every setting after it.
One layer, two choices, and a way through to a person. An auto attendant earns its place by reaching the right desk faster than a receptionist could, not by proving you have departments.
Plenty of offices here are leased suites where the internet arrives through the building and you did not choose the provider. Make video calls from the desks the phones will sit on, at the hour the building is fullest, before you order anything.
The general cases are set out on the main VoIP guide. Two of them turn up in a shape this suburb produces more than most.
No. The three codes over this ground run across the whole north side of the metro, and not one of them narrows to a single suburb. Whichever you are offered reads as local to everybody here. If being understood as a Plano business matters to you, that job belongs to your website, your Google Business Profile and the first line of your greeting, and the number only has to avoid contradicting them.
No, and imitating one is the usual mistake here. Somebody who has spent the morning inside a large system has been on hold twice already and is quietly hoping you will be different. A short greeting, a person who can finish the call, and a callback that actually happens all read as more substantial than a menu with departments that turn out to be the same two people.
Both, but not as one long day. Business callers cluster in the middle of the morning and the middle of the afternoon and then stop early, while household callers ring once their own working day has finished. Name who covers each stretch, put the real hours in the greeting in Central time, and make the messages left in the evening somebody's job the next morning.

A VoIP line runs over the internet, so there is no network to be at the edge of and no corner of the country where the service gets thin. That is why this map has no holes in it. The shading is not signal strength, it is how much has been written down, and Texas is one of the darker ones because it has city pages of its own.
Every state is linked. Business VoIP by state and city lists all fifty of them, and the 80 cities with a page, as ordinary links.
Tell us who rings you, at what hour, and where your people are when it happens. We will say what to set up, what to skip, and if the connection in your building is the real problem we will say that first.
