A code the rest of the country can place

702 and 725 both reach a business here. They are laid over each other rather than split between different halves of the map, so neither of them narrows a caller down to a particular part of town, and the one you are handed records when you asked for a number rather than where you put your desk. What is unusual is what happens when that number leaves the state. Nearly every local code in America means nothing to somebody who does not live under it. This city is one of the few exceptions, because it is known far beyond the people who have been here, and 702 has been attached to it long enough that plenty of them recognise it on sight.

That is an asset if being here is part of what you sell. It works against you if your buyers are elsewhere and want somebody close to them, because the number announces a distance nobody asked about. The newer code carries none of that recognition yet, and a business taking a number today is likelier to be offered it. If the older one is worth something to your trade, say so while you are still choosing.

Season is the other pressure and it works differently than people expect. Summer is long and severe, and the winters are mild enough that outdoor trades never really stop, so there is no dead quarter to catch up in. The load climbs for months, then eases, and during the climb what a service business earns is rarely limited by the size of the crew. It is limited by how many calls got answered by something better than a ringing tone.

None of this service is a Las Vegas product

Worth saying flatly, because pages like this one usually imply otherwise. Nobody has built a phone system for this city. We have been offered a 725 number. Does that cost us the recognition 702 has?

Locally, not at all. The two codes lie over the same ground and reach you the same way, so nobody in the valley reads anything into which one you hold. Out of state it is a smaller difference than people fear but not nothing, because 702 is one of the few local codes a stranger can place and the newer one has not had time to become that. If that recognition earns you work, ask what is available before you accept a number, since changing it later means reprinting everything it appears on.

Our customers work nights, so calls arrive at every hour. What should the schedule look like?

Something with more than two settings. Open and closed is a shape borrowed from an office day, and it fits badly in a city where the people who ring you are spread across three shifts. Decide which hours get a live person, which get a greeting that names a callback time, and which get a route to whoever is on call. Remember that a caller at midnight here is usually not in trouble. They are using the one free hour their own shift gives them.

Can a caller tell we answered from a vehicle on the far side of the valley?
