816 covers the Missouri side of this region and has done since area codes were first handed out. What matters is not its age. It is that the code was never asked to carry the whole metro, because a large share of the built-up area sits across a state line and dials something else.
So your code still does a job it has given up almost everywhere else. In most cities a second code was laid over the first and the digits stopped saying anything but roughly which decade the number was issued. A second code, 975, was laid over this one in October 2023, but it inherited the same border, so either code still says which side of a state line you sit on, and that line is a real one.
Which cuts both ways. Missouri side, the code is a small free credential worth keeping. If a good share of your invoices go to addresses in the other state, the same digits mark you as the firm from across the line, and a second number on the Kansas side is the fix rather than a move.
816 also reaches well past the built-up part of the region, up into the northwest corner of the state, so it behaves more like a regional code than a city one. 975 has covered the same ground since October 2023, so a new line may be issued on either.
The working day here starts before the office does
This is a freight town underneath everything else. A large share of the businesses here haul something, store it, broker it or repair the equipment that carries it, and that shapes the phone more than any marketing decision.
Dispatch and dock work start in the dark. A driver with a problem calls when the problem happens, before your office opens and after it shuts, and a driver does not leave a voicemail and wait. A distribution economy also sells outward, so the eastern seaboard rings before you are in and the west coast after you have gone.
Kitchens and the trades hold the other end of it, and none of this is fixed by a better handset. It is fixed by deciding in advance where a call lands at five in the morning, at noon and at seven. Weather that fills the phone, and weather that empties the building
The seasons here are not subtle. Spring and early summer bring severe storms with wind and hail, summer is hot and humid enough to kill air conditioners in batches, and winter brings ice and the freeze that splits pipes. Roofers, glass firms, tree crews and heating and air contractors take a serious share of their year out of a handful of those days.
A hail line crossing a populated stretch of the metro is the extreme version. It produces more calls in two days than the previous two months, from people who have never called you and will hire whoever picks up. No phone system makes more of you. What it can do is leave the callers you never got to as a list rather than as nothing.
Ice is the opposite failure. The building is shut, everybody has power at home, and the phone in the office rings to nobody. What the storm half adds is that an outage takes your router with it, and a dead router is a dead desk phone, so the rule that sends calls out to a mobile has to exist beforehand.

Yes, and that is more than most area codes tell anybody now. The code covers the Missouri side and stops there, because the other half of the metro sits in another state and dials something else.
