Columbus grew outward, and it kept growing after 614 ran short of numbers. So 380 was laid over the same ground rather than beside it. Two codes, one place, and a business number that no longer tells a caller which part of the metro you work.

A new area code is usually a border. A line gets drawn, the places on one side keep the old digits, the places on the other are handed new ones, and afterwards the code works as a rough map. Columbus did not get that. 380 was placed over the whole of 614's territory, so neither code belongs to a part of town.
Two things follow. A 380 number is exactly as local as a 614 one, because there is nowhere here that is one and not the other. And nobody in this metro dials seven digits any more. Two codes on one map make the full ten compulsory for everybody.
That leaves a code proving the metro and nothing finer. Somebody who has read 614 as home for decades may take a second look at 380, which is a recognition problem rather than a coverage one. It costs nothing to close: say the city in the opening line of your greeting.

The state's own business is run from this city, and so is a great deal of insurance and finance. That puts most local callers on a conventional office day, bunched either side of lunch and done at five. The one you miss is not coming back.
A large share of the country's population sits inside a day's drive of here, which is why so much regional work is storing and moving other people's goods. A yard does not wait for opening time. The first call lands while the office lights are off.
A very large student population means tens of thousands of local addresses change hands inside the same few weeks of late summer. For a cleaner, a locksmith or a small removals outfit that is not a busy season. It is a year of calls at once.
This city spread outward for decades and has not stopped. The built-up area runs a long way in every direction, the edges are still being built on, and nothing in the landscape says where it ought to end. Two customers can both be in Columbus and be the better part of an hour apart.
So the first question on a call here is not what do you need, it is where are you. Your number cannot answer it, because both codes cover the lot. The cheapest place to ask is the greeting: name the parts of the metro you cover, and a caller outside them can hang up before either of you has spent ten minutes finding out. Weather bunches the calls here, twice a year and in opposite directions. Winter does not settle into one long freeze. It crosses back and forth over freezing, repeatedly, which is what splits pipes, lifts concrete and finds every gap in a roof. Summer storms do the same job at speed, and because there is no lake shore and no valley here to break a storm line up, one of them can put the whole service area on the phone in the same hour rather than half of it.
Either way a trade that takes four calls on an ordinary day takes thirty in an afternoon, and a single line answers the fifth of them with a busy signal. A stranger hears that as closed, not as in demand. What copes is dull, and here it has to sort by geography as well as by who is free: the number ringing whichever crew is already on that side of the metro rather than whoever happens to pick up first, and every message it takes keeping the caller's end of town, because on a day like that the order you drive in is the only order you can actually work. What is true is that somebody who has dialed 614 for thirty years may hesitate over it. Name the city in the first line of your greeting and the hesitation goes.

It earns its place only when there is a real crew, a real office or a campaign you want to measure on its own. Short of that you have built a second place for calls to be missed.
No. The file holds the number, and the number itself does not move. What changes is where it points after somebody dials it, and that is invisible from outside. Carry the published number across rather than asking a purchasing office to update its records, because that is the request that sits in somebody else's queue longest. Worth writing down who else prints it before you start, though, because that list is always longer than the one you keep.
