The two hours before anybody is at a desk
Albuquerque starts early. The laboratories and the base run early shifts, and from late spring the trades are on site at first light, because a roof is unworkable by the middle of the afternoon.
Mountain time does the rest. A customer in Atlanta ringing at nine of their morning reaches you at seven of yours, and if the business number is a mobile in somebody's pocket, that call gets answered at a stop light on Coors or not at all.
The case for a phone system here is therefore about hours more than technology. The number answers on a schedule you set, with your business name in the greeting, and rings a mobile only when you want one rung.
What a 505 number says, and what it cannot
There is no code to choose in Albuquerque. The 505 code covers the whole metro, from the West Mesa across the river to the foothills, and carries on north to Santa Fe and out over a wide stretch of the state. Your number places you in a region and stops there.
What a caller here actually wants to know is whether you come out to them. Addresses carry a quadrant and people use it the way other cities use a neighbourhood name. A number cannot carry that. Your greeting has to.

One line naming how far you really go, over the river to Rio Rancho, up the canyon to the East Mountains, south to Los Lunas. Then route the far calls to whoever owns the diary rather than the person already up a ladder.

Work out whether you also need to sound national
Sell to the labs, a base contractor or a production office and half your buyers have never seen a 505 number in their lives. A toll-free number gives those people nothing to misread, while 505 tells a homeowner in Nob Hill that you could be at the door this afternoon. Work out which of the two pays your bills, put that number on the van, and keep the other one for the website.

The weeks that decide the year here
Albuquerque has a calendar that shows up in call logs, and it is not a snow city's.
- Cooler season, at both ends. Evaporative coolers are opened and repadded in spring, then drained before the first hard freeze. Two fortnights a year when every plumber in the city takes the same call at once.
- Monsoon. Summer rain arrives in violent bursts on buildings designed to be flat, and the calls about water getting in come during the storm, not the week after.
- Balloon Fiesta. Early October fills the hotels and restaurants, moves the whole north side at dawn, and puts thousands of visitors on phones asking one short question each.
- Chile season. Roasting turns small food businesses into order takers for a few weeks, mostly by phone, mostly from people who ring the next name if nobody picks up.
None of that sells a phone system by itself. It is a reason to be honest about which fortnight decides your year, because that is when a call that rings out is a job somebody else does.
The service itself is sold nationally, and we will not pretend otherwise
Nothing inside a business phone system was built for this city. It is the same product a shop in Ohio buys, run from data centres that are not in New Mexico, and there is no local edition of it.
The genuinely local part is short: the 505 code, the hours your callers ring on, and how a signal behaves inside your own walls. The last one deserves a note, because buildings here have a habit.
Stucco, lath and the far end of the shop
A rendered wall in New Mexico is usually stucco over expanded metal lath, and a metal screen is precisely what wifi cannot get through. Put a cordless handset at the back of an old adobe building, or in a metal-skinned shop, and you get two bars and calls that sound like it.
So run a cable to the desk that takes the most calls, and test from the corner the phone will live in rather than the office you are standing in now. Who should not switch, in Albuquerque terms

- The person you would forward to spends the day on a controlled site. Plenty of people here work inside the base or a laboratory where a personal handset does not go in with them. Forwarding sends your customer to a phone locked in a car, and the caller hears it ring and decides they were ignored.
- Your busiest fortnight starts next week. A number does not move overnight, and whatever you build will want adjusting once real callers start hitting it. Do not begin that in the run-up to Fiesta, or in the first wet week of the monsoon. Begin it in January, when the phone is dull and a mistake costs you nothing.
If neither is you, then what you are fixing is dull. A call lands while the only person who could take it is up a ladder or driving back over the river, and nobody rings a second time about a cooler that still does not work.

Is 505 the only area code I can get in Albuquerque?
For a number anchored in the Albuquerque metro, yes. 505 covers the city, so there is nothing to choose between here the way there is in places that carry two codes. What varies is which individual numbers a provider has on hand the day you order, so get yours confirmed before it goes on a van or a sign. Asking costs nothing. A reprint does not.

Better than a person can, because a recorded greeting answers it at six in the morning and on a Sunday. Put the area you cover into that greeting in one plain line, and give the question its own extension so a scheduler handles it rather than whoever is nearest a roof.
